Description
Canon 5DS R High Resolution DSLR (50.6MP)
Maximum detail from a DSLR platform.
The 5DS R is designed for resolution-critical work. With a 50.6MP full frame sensor and no effective low pass filter, it delivers the sharpest possible image from this system.
This is a deliberate choice for shoots where detail, texture, and cropping flexibility matter.
⸻
Low pass filter, simply
Most cameras slightly smooth fine detail to avoid digital artefacts.
The 5DS R does not. It captures the full detail of the sensor.
This means:
- higher sharpness and texture
- more detail for retouching and large format output
- but possible glitching (moire) on very fine patterns
⸻
Real world use
- Jewellery and gem photography
- Product and still life work
- Beauty and skin detail
- Advertising and campaign imagery
- Large format prints
- Fine art reproduction of paintings and photographic works
⸻
Lens pairing suggestions
To fully utilise the 50.6MP sensor, pair with high-resolution specialist lenses:
- Canon MP-E 65mm f2.8 1–5x Macro
Extreme close-up detail. Ideal for gemstones, textures, and precision product work. - Canon EF 180mm f3.5L Macro
Longer working distance with strong compression. Useful for jewellery and small objects where space and control are important. - Canon TS-E 135mm f4L Macro
Tilt-shift control for product and still life. Allows precise focus placement and perspective control. Ideal for high-end commercial and fine art reproduction work.
These lenses help extract maximum detail while maintaining control over focus, perspective, and working distance.
⸻
When to choose 5DS instead
If your subject includes tight repeating patterns such as:
- patterned fabrics
- fine weaves
- printed halftone images
the standard 5DS is the safer option as it reduces moire.
